After a fantastic campaign last season, Fernando Redondo has been given one objective. Keep Argentinos Juniors in Argentina’s top division.
The Primera Division new boys wasted little time replacing former Head Coach Gabriel Heinze, moving quickly to secure the former Real Madrid midfielder as coach before the new season starts.
Redondo, 48, accepted the job after speaking with former Argentinos Juniors manager Jorge Solari. A young Redondo made the move to Europe to play under Solari at CD Tenerife and the pair are said to have a strong personal relationship.
Redondo has been confirmed as the new manager of AAAJ until the end of the season.
Bichos Colorados Chairman Cristian Malaspina said: ‘We have wanted Fernando to return home for some time, he has taken his time, completed his badges and has really impressed us with his philosophy and football style over the course of some behind closed doors training sessions’.
‘This is a great opportunity for Fernando, we feel this is a bold and exciting appointment in our aim to retain the club’s Primera Division status’.
The Argentine coach is yet to confirm his backroom staff and was reluctant to talk about transfers. With funds tight, it’s likely that Redondo will concentrate on the famed ‘El Semillero’ youth academy for fresh blood, however football is a results business so he’ll have to act fast or this fantasy appointment may be over before it’s even started.
